The lack of diverse voices in science is an important issue. Combating this requires not only acknowledgement of the issue but more importantly action to build a more diverse and inclusive scientific community. I strive to educate myself on these issues and implement change.

In particular, as someone who carries out fieldwork in Latin America, my goal is to move away from colonial scientific practices. This requires inclusion of researchers from the countries in which fieldwork is being carried out, as well as better access to scientific resources.

I aim to achieve this by implementing the following practices:

  • I will try to build collaborations with local researchers in the countries in which I carry out fieldwork
  • I will publish in open access journals, and make all datasets publicly available
  • I will make the outcomes of my scientific research accessible in the local language (in this case Spanish)
  • I will participate in committees dedicated to these issues
